Del Toro Calls Two ‘Hobbit’ Prequels A Single Story

Ongoing meetings between Del Toro, cohorts Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens, and LOTR director Peter Jackson have a single goal: to make the whole five-film-series feel like one long and continuous story. "We all agree that if we do our job right, it should all feel like a continuous journey. That’s what we’re striving for," Del Toro said. "You should see a movie that’s five pictures long. If we do our job right, you put in ‘The Hobbit’ and you wind up watching the entire Pentology!"

When asked where the break would occur which draws the line between Hobbit parts 1 and 2, he replied "I think Smaug dies in the first movie. So draw your own conclusions."
