THE ORVILLE is a live-action Science Fiction ensemble comedic drama set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship, as its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life. The series stars Seth MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer an officer in the Planetary Union, who finally gets to live out his dream of exploring uncharted space as the Captain of the USS Orville, Adrianne Palicki also stars as Commander Kelly Grayson, who is assigned as his First Officer and is also his ex-wife. The Orville is a homage to classic Star Trek (TOS).
Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane), an officer in the Planetary Union, finally gets to live out his dream of exploring uncharted space as the captain of the USS Orville, a mid-level exploratory vessel. This is his last chance to prove himself, after a year of poor performance in the aftermath of a divorce. On their way to their first mission, they stop to pick up Mercer’s new first officer — his ex-wife, Commander Kelly Grayson. Joining Ed on this adventure is a crew packed with colorful characters from all over the galaxy.
The series features many connections to Star Trek. Penny Johnson Jerald (Kasidy Yates on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) plays Doctor Claire Finn. Fellow Star Trek alumni Brannon Braga, Robert Duncan McNeill, David A. Goodman, James Conway, and Jonathan Frakes are involved behind the scenes. Other Trek series actors have made guest or cameo appearances on The Orville.
In 2019, Dark Horse Comics released a limited run of comics based on The Orville TV series.
